Diamond Testing Adds New

Features to It’s Online DST P.O.R.T.A.L.

Faster speed and enhanced data capture!

It has already been a year since the launch of Diamond Testing’s Producers Online Real-Time Analysis and Logging system (P.O.R.T.A.L.) and customers have been quick to utilize the system’s many features.  They have also been pouring in requests for system upgrades and enhancements that will improve their day-to-day workload.  “The changes ranged from small tweaks that were quick to implement to others that were ambitious and powerful additions,” according to Jacob McCallie, Diamond Testing’s General Manager.  Designing a system from the ground up and making additions at the customer’s request, in order to make their lives easier, is the foundation of the P.O.R.T.A.L.’s design and intent. “I’m very thankful to all the customers that have provided feedback and ideas for improvements to the P.O.R.T.A.L. system.  The input they provide to improve the way they get and use their DST information is what makes the P.O.R.T.A.L. their system, we just manage it,” said Jacob. Throughout the past 12 months, Diamond Testing has spent time developing these enhancements for their customers and the first phase of this roll out has been implemented this month.

The first major upgrade was to the core of the system.  Upgrading the way the system processes the data has doubled the speed at which the pages render.  At the top of the list for enhancements is an ‘Operation’ status indicator to provide the customer a quick reference as to where in the DST process the operation is at currently.  This feature provides the customer with status updates such as tester on location, tripping in the hole with the tool, testing, tripping out of the hole and uploading recovery and pressures.

The ‘bottomless bucket’ has also seen enhancements.  The graphical representations of each period of the test is now extended to the ‘close’ periods as well.  Clicking on either the open or closed period shows those periods in both raw data and in graphical form for each period.  Also added was a ‘Max Reading’ for each period, which allows the operator to see not only the current value of that period but also the max reading obtained for that period.  “It is important to us that our customers feel like they are watching the whole process, seeing the blow back ‘build’ or ‘die-off’ as well as know where it was at its peak,” Jacob emphasized.

Another feature requested was the ability for the customer to view the outside recorder and be able to download that file.  Adding the downloadable outside recorder file was a key enhancement for customers who use this RAW data for in-house analysis.  Improvements in how resistivity of water was displayed marked another customer request. Providing the RW of any water sample caught is key for the operator; however, it only shows them what the value is at surface temperature conditions.  Providing the number at ‘formation temperature’ allows the operator to see this RW number at the source without having to do the conversion themselves.

The addition of a ‘Max H2S’ value for ‘gas in pipe’ was added to provide useful data and improve safety when testing additional wells in that area.  Just knowing the potential for H2S in the area is a valuable data set when testing other wells in the same vicinity. “Safety is a huge concern for us, and while we approach all ‘gas in pipe’ as a potential H2S hazard, being able to use this data preemptively before the tool even goes into the hole improves how we deal with it during the test.  This data also allows the operator to implement and communicate their strategy with us for how to handle it during the planning stage of the well before its even spudded,” remarked Jacob.

With phase one additions now complete and rolled out to customers, the development of additional tools for Diamond Testing’s customers in phase two are already currently in the development process.  “Phase two is going to be exciting! The new tools being developed will help the operator plan their next well’s DST strategy as well as evaluate a current well in progress,” Jacob concluded with a grin.  “It's going to be impactful, you will just have to stay tuned.” While all these upgrades look to enhance the operator’s data collection for future wells, most of these enhancements are also backwards compatible with the DST data currently in the system from prior drill stem tests; a big advantage.  The P.O.R.T.A.L. system is the core platform for all drill stem testing information provided by Diamond Testing - at no additional cost. The consistent focus on putting the operator in control of their own DST data remains the primary goal of Diamond Testing, the P.O.R.T.A.L. system and it’s upgrades, now and in the future.
