Diamond Testing Launches New Online DST P.O.R.T.A.L.
The Next Big Innovation in Drill Stem Testing is Digital!
Technological innovations have never been quick to make it to the Kansas oilfield services industry, especially in recent years amid the plague of low crude oil prices, but one company has used the slow period to rethink the way they deliver their services - with impressive results.
Diamond Testing LLC based in Hoisington, Kansas, the state’s oldest drill stem testing company, has announced the deployment of a new web-based online data collecting and reporting system for drill stem tests. Drill stem testing is utilized by oil operators during the drilling process to determine the viability of the well via pressures and other measurable variables before they spend money completing the well (vs. plugging it). The online system, known as the P.O.R.T.A.L. which stands for the Producer’s Online Real-Time Analysis & Logging (system), provides the producer with access to their DST data in real-time as it’s being entered by the tester at the well-site. The system provides a host of additional features including a fluid/gas displacement estimator, real-time graphing of surface ‘blows’ during formation tests, and even a built-in messaging system to improve information and communication sharing among producers, investors, geologists, and Diamond’s testers during on-site work.
“Getting here wasn’t easy”, says Jacob McCallie, General Manager for Diamond Testing. Like everyone else, we’ve taken the last few years to reevaluate our business and look for areas where we could improve our offering to our customers. In subsequent conversations with customers a common theme kept emerging. Many (customers) liked the idea of a digital online website to receive, monitor, and store all their relevant DST data indefinitely. “But that’s all it was a couple years ago - an idea”, Mr. McCallie explained.
Our customers stressed that they wanted innovations and real improvements in the oilfield services that they rely upon. In our business specifically, we listened to what the customer wanted and needed, and we ultimately decided we had to figure out how to deliver that value to them. We had to be flexible and think outside the box a bit, all while being mindful not to increase costs.
Given that few software programs exist for the DST industry that could provide the level of innovation required, Diamond and Mr. McCallie resolved to build the system themselves from the ground up, a nearly 2-year long project by the time it was completed. Fast forward to 2017 and Mr. McCallie’s new P.O.R.T.A.L. system is beginning to deliver on Diamond Testing’s promise of meaningful innovation in the oilfield services arena. After approximately 6-months of system (beta) testing and refinement, Diamond’s P.O.R.T.A.L. was officially launched in August 2017 as the standard offering to customers, according to the company.
This is an exciting time for those oil producers who utilize DST services, opined Mr. McCallie. The capability to see well DST data online as well as interact and manipulate those data points and reports has given the producer more control over the DST process than ever before - from their computer or smartphone. Combine that with the real-time delivery of the DST data, and you start to impact testing decision-making that can save big dollars in service costs. We think Diamond’s P.O.R.T.A.L system sets a new bar for DST services, Mr. McCallie concluded.
Now it’s just about getting the word out - which is the fun part, McCallie quipped. Customer feedback this year has been overwhelmingly positive. Diamond Testing is looking forward to greeting more happy customers as producers across the central plains ‘login’ to see their DST tests in action in 2018.
